Syed Ahmed, 38, an Essex maths teacher, has been jailed for 10 years for grooming and sexually abusing teenage girls after posing as teenage boys online.

Syed Ahmed, 38, a maths teacher from Redbridge, has been jailed for 10 years at Southwark Crown Court for grooming and sexually abusing teenage girls. He targeted girls aged between 13 and 16, none of whom were his students, using social media platforms including Snapchat, Wizz and Yubo, where he presented himself as a teenage boy using a false name, age and highly-filtered self-image.

Ahmed was convicted of rape, sexual assault and other child sex offences. He will serve an additional three-year extended licence period following his release.

Prosecutor Daniel O'Donoghue outlined Ahmed's grooming methods. He used flattery, promises of gifts, declarations of love and future relationships, and sent images of other girls in his car to build trust with his victims. He then skilfully moved conversations towards sexual topics. In some cases he asked for and received sexual images from the girls.

Ahmed persuaded five of his victims to meet him in person. He drove these girls to remote locations including wooded areas, an unfurnished flat and a summerhouse, where he carried out sexual acts.

None of the girls he targeted were his students at his school in Essex, though he was working as a maths teacher at the time of the offences.
