Jeff Brazier pleaded guilty to driving 37mph in a 30mph zone and failing to identify his campervan's driver.
TV presenter Jeff Brazier has pleaded guilty to two motoring offences involving his Volkswagen campervan. An automatic speed camera recorded him driving at 37mph in a 30mph zone on the northbound A16 near Burwell, Lincolnshire, at 11.11pm on 5 April. He also pleaded guilty to failing to provide information about the driver's identity.
In written mitigation submitted to the court, the 47-year-old Essex resident said he had instructed a solicitor to examine the 'validity' of the speeding charge. He stated that he had been behind a police car throughout the stretch of road in question, which was driving within the speed limit, and believed the zone was 30mph rather than 30mph. 'I must have believed we were in a 40mph zone, it's a road I use often and I have never got it wrong before,' he said.
Brazier acknowledged that poor communication with his solicitor had resulted in him missing the opportunity to contest the offence. 'Sadly my opportunity to contest has been wasted through my poor communication with my solicitor so I accept that I clearly have got this wrong and that I was speeding in my campervan,' he wrote.
Regarding the failure to identify the driver, Brazier explained that he had contacted his solicitor believing the speeding charges were incorrect and assumed the matter had been resolved when they did not discuss it further. Lincolnshire Police sent him a letter notifying him of this charge on 18 September. He told the court he regretted not checking on the progress of the matter.
Brazier entered his pleas through the fast-track Single Justice Procedure and was not required to attend court in person.
