Ex-Arizona teacher pleads guilty to abuse material charges

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 27 Oct, 00:02 · Archive

A former Prescott High School teacher has pleaded guilty to child sexual exploitation charges.

Scott Douglas Miller, 40, a former Prescott High School teacher, has pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor. The Yavapai County Attorney's Office announced the plea on Monday.

Miller will be sentenced to a 10- to 24-year flat-time prison sentence, meaning no early release for good behavior. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and serve lifetime sex offender probation after his release from prison. Sentencing is scheduled for 23 November.

Detectives began investigating in December 2024 after a computer used in an undercover Homeland Security Investigations operation received three child sexual abuse videos from someone in the Prescott area. That person was identified as Miller. Authorities stated that Miller had been accessing child sexual abuse material for years. Prosecutors noted that none of the children in the videos were from Prescott High School or Yavapai County.

Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said he hoped the lengthy sentence would deter others from seeking or trading such images on the internet. He also called on the Arizona Legislature to pass a law allowing the death penalty for anyone who sexually harms a child, particularly those in positions of trust such as teachers, lawyers, medical professionals and police officers.
