South Dakota's pheasant hunting season opens Saturday with experts predicting a solid start.

South Dakota's pheasant season opens Saturday with experts predicting a solid start for hunters. The season draws visitors from across the country and internationally, with many returning year after year. Some hunters have been making the trip for decades, turning the weekend into a family tradition.

Nate Russell from Pennsylvania said he has been coming since 2017, joining his father-in-law on trips his grandfather has made for about 30 years. Charlie Russell from Pennsylvania expressed interest in continuing the tradition with his own children. Dan Taylor from Tennessee noted that his group values the friendships built through the hunting trips, saying hunters come 'for the wrong reason' if they focus only on shooting birds.

The season brings economic benefits to South Dakota communities. Teri Schmidt, CEO of Experience Sioux Falls, said hunters 'spend their money here' and 'go home and talk about Sioux Falls and all of South Dakota', boosting the state's tourism industry. For many participants, the experience centres on the people they meet and memories made whilst in the state rather than the hunt alone.
