Second robber jailed for attacking boys and stealing bicycle

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 3 Nov, 17:46 · Archive

A man has been jailed for more than four years for attacking teenage boys in Peterborough and stealing a bicycle.

Imran Ali has been jailed for 50 months at Cambridge Crown Court for his part in attacking a group of teenage boys in Peterborough and stealing a bicycle. He was found guilty of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

The attack took place at around 5pm on April 18 on a bridge between Ivatt Way and Bourges Boulevard. Ali and two other men ambushed three teenagers, two of whom were on bicycles and one on a scooter. The robbers blocked the path of the boys, pushed them off their bikes and scooter, and repeatedly punched them using keys held within their knuckles as improvised weapons.

The boys tried to defend themselves, but Ali managed to ride away on one of the bicycles, a Carrera worth approximately £600. He was followed by his co-defendant Declan Hyland, who shouted an insult at the boys as he fled. The victims suffered minor injuries, including cuts caused by the keys used as weapons.

Police identified Ali through CCTV footage from the area. Hyland was identified following a media appeal with images of the perpetrators. Hyland, of no known address, admitted to robbery and two counts of attempted robbery and was sentenced to five years in prison at Cambridge Crown Court on 12 October.

Detective Constable George Corney described the attack as 'a nasty attack on three teenage boys that understandably left them extremely shaken' and said it was 'cowardly' for three men to attack young boys who 'admirably tried to defend themselves'.
