The Atlanta Falcons' new throwback logo prompted widespread Nazi Germany comparisons after its Wednesday release on social media.

The Atlanta Falcons released a throwback logo on Wednesday showing a falcon symbol from the 1960s and 1970s emblazoned on a background of red, white and black stripes. The design was intended for use ahead of Sunday's game against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

Social media users quickly drew comparisons between the logo and Nazi imagery. The Falcons' post on X attracted over 26 million views and prompted an avalanche of comments, with users creating memes and jokes referencing both the logo design and the team's 2017 Super Bowl collapse. Comments combined football terminology with World War II references.

By late Thursday afternoon, the Falcons had switched their X profile picture to a red helmet with a falcon on it, which they will wear for Sunday's game. The Falcons are 2-4 this season.
