Family poisoned by out-of-date meat from York supermarket

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 16 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

A family suffered food poisoning after buying salami from a York supermarket that was 19 days past its use-by date.

A family suffered food poisoning and required emergency medical treatment after eating salami bought from Zam Zam Supermarket in Layerthorpe, York. The meat had been on display 19 days past its use-by date, the city's magistrates heard.

When trading standards officers visited the halal supermarket on three separate days, they found the same salami still for sale with the same use-by date. A catalogue of meat and other perishables were on sale up to 41 days past their use-by date. The supermarket also had no procedure in place for checking that out-of-date food had been removed from sale, and was selling illegal vapes.

Zam Zam Foods York Ltd faced 10 charges of offering unsafe food for sale and three of offering illegal vapes for supply. Its two directors, Serwan Ali, 49, and Dana Mustafa, 48, faced the same charges. All three defendants were convicted. The company was fined £14,000 with a £2,000 statutory surcharge. Ali and Mustafa were each fined £1,230, ordered to pay £150 compensation to the family, a £492 statutory surcharge and £2,000 prosecution costs. In total they paid £23,744.

Representing the defendants, Uzama Patel said the two directors had been on holiday with their families in Kurdistan when the officers visited and had left the supermarket in the charge of their manager.
