Baby's family backs £35,000 hospital play area appeal

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 17:03 · Archive

Parents of a baby who spent six months in hospital are supporting a £35,000 appeal to build an outdoor play area at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Robyn Sargent was born at Royal Lancaster Infirmary in April with complex health needs. After receiving treatment in both Lancaster and Manchester, she went home on 8 October, having spent her first six months in hospital. Community teams from University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust continue to care for her.

Her parents, Harriet and Tim Sargent from Lancaster, are backing Bay Hospitals Charity's £35,000 Sunshine Smiles Appeal. The appeal aims to create a new outdoor play area at Royal Lancaster Infirmary for babies and children undergoing treatment, along with their siblings.

Harriet, a teacher at Lancaster Boys' Grammar School, described being able to take Robyn outside as 'one of the most emotional moments'. She said: 'She had spent so long indoors. Suddenly there was sunlight, wind, fresh air and all the sounds and sensations of being outside. Watching her experience that for the first time was incredibly special.' She added that an outdoor space would give older brother Sebastian, two, and sister Adelaide, five, a break during hospital visits.
