Sydney's Wentworth Park will host its last greyhound racing meeting on Friday, ending nearly a century of racing at the historic venue.

Sydney's Wentworth Park will hold its final greyhound racing meeting on Friday, ending almost a century of racing at the historic venue. The track, known affectionately as 'Wenty' by locals, has been synonymous with greyhound racing since the sport began there in 1932. By the 1970s, the track was attracting large crowds.

Geoff Rose, chair of the NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association, said the closure is a sign of the times, with the land in the inner-west suburb of Glebe worth a fortune as the city grows. 'It is quite heartbreaking to a lot of people,' Rose told AAP. Ron Arnold, who has worked in the industry for 50 years and most recently as the track's master of ceremonies, said the closure marks the end of greyhound racing's associated brand in New South Wales. 'Those major tracks have got a brand, like the Sydney Cricket Ground or the Melbourne Cricket Ground, they mean something even to people that don't follow the respective sports,' Arnold told AAP.

All buildings on the site are slated for demolition after October 2027. The site is planned to be returned to parkland under the auspices of City of Sydney Council. Wentworth Park itself was constructed between 1876 and 1880 using silt dredged from Sydney Harbour.
