Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 1 Nov, 12:01 · Archive

Police in Scotland responded to 144 calls relating to fireworks on Halloween, including reports of them being thrown at people, buildings and vehicles.

Police in Scotland responded to 144 calls relating to fireworks on Halloween, a decrease from 160 calls the previous year. In some areas, fireworks were thrown at people, buildings and vehicles, with incidents reported in Glasgow, Tranent in East Lothian and Bonnyrigg in Midlothian. Officers described general 'outstanding behaviour and co-operation' around the country but said they were committed to catching those responsible for disorder.

Firework control zones, where setting off fireworks is an offence, were in place in 14 areas in Edinburgh and four in Glasgow until early November. Dispersal zones were also in force in some places. Seven dispersal orders were issued in Edinburgh during Operation Moonbeam, the police operation running until 5 November to deal with violence and disorder linked to fireworks.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson, gold commander for Operation Moonbeam, said: 'The overwhelming majority of Scotland's communities have celebrated Halloween in the proper spirit. Sadly, however, we have again experienced incidents of fireworks used as projectiles at buildings, vehicles and members of the public. This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and has to stop before there are serious consequences.' Police said inquiries to identify those involved were ongoing.
