Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 16 Oct, 10:58 · Archive

Five new Deputy Lieutenants have been appointed in Cumbria to support civic life in the county.

Five new Deputy Lieutenants have been appointed in Cumbria. The announcement was made by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr Alexander Scott, on 16 October. The appointments recognise 'significant contributions to public life, community leadership, and voluntary service across the county'.

The new Deputy Lieutenants are Mrs Moira Fisher of Longtown, Mr Neil Jurd OBE of Kendal, Wing Commander Matthew Lawrence of Brampton, Mrs Lucy McLaren of Cartmel, and Mrs Julie Wannop of Carlisle. They will join Vice Lord-Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Chris Sanderson OBE JP and 31 other Deputy Lieutenants across the county.

Mr Scott said that since his appointment by His Majesty The King, he had thought carefully about how the Lieutenancy could best serve Cumbria. 'Our role is to represent the Crown, uphold its dignity, celebrate achievement, and encourage goodwill and cooperation,' he said. 'With the support of my Deputy Lieutenants, our purpose is not to replace the work of others, but to celebrate, promote, and champion the people and initiatives that make Cumbria thrive.'

Deputy Lieutenants serve in a voluntary capacity and are involved in a range of civic, ceremonial, and community duties. Their responsibilities include attending Remembrance events and church services, presenting awards, and taking part in official county ceremonies. They also help promote the achievements of individuals, communities, and businesses across Cumbria.

Appointments are made by the Lord-Lieutenant with the approval of the Prime Minister.
