Five people were arrested during firework-related disorder in Birmingham city centre on Bonfire Night.
Five people were arrested after firework-related disorder in Birmingham city centre on Bonfire Night, November 5. A teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing fireworks, whilst two other teenagers were detained on suspicion of public order offences and failing to disperse. Two men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting police. Officers dispersed several people who had been gathering around Aston's Bagot Street.
The incident followed earlier disorder on Halloween when fireworks were let off dangerously in the city centre. BBC Birmingham reports that seven people aged between 15 and 26 were arrested after fireworks were set off close to police officers and vehicles on Corporation Street.
On Friday night, November 6, two further men aged 26 and 28 were arrested after fireworks were fired from a rooftop on Dale End in the city centre. West Midlands Police used drones to search the area. Discarded fireworks and a lighter were recovered. The two men were detained on suspicion of illegally throwing fireworks in a public place and remained in custody for questioning.
Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce said: "This kind of behaviour is irresponsible and dangerous. Misusing fireworks is against the law. If you are misusing fireworks, you can expect to be dealt with and prosecuted."
Section 60 stop-and-search powers, allowing officers to stop and search anyone without the need for reasonable grounds, were introduced across a large part of the city until 8am on November 6. BirminghamLive reports that these powers were extended and in place again from 4pm on Saturday, November 7, until 7am on Sunday, covering the main city centre, the Frankfurt Christmas Market, Broad Street, Digbeth, Southside and the Jewellery Quarter. A Section 60AA authorisation also allowed officers to demand people remove face coverings.
