Ford reveals one-off Mustang ute with Ranger tray

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 9 Oct, 22:55 · Archive

Ford has built a one-off Mustang ute using a Ford Ranger load-bed, combining Australia's most popular sports car with its best-selling vehicle.

Ford Motor Company has revealed a one-off Mustang ute built by its Experimental Vehicle Building Metal Shop in the US. The custom orange vehicle, based on the previous-generation S550 model sold in Australia, combines Australia's most popular sports car with the nation's best-selling model overall.

The build took hundreds of hours of labour. The team modified the Mustang's sloping roofline to end just behind the front seats, removed the rear quarter windows and back seats, and replaced the original fastback rear-end with an open tray. A load-bed floor from the Australian-developed Ford Ranger was integrated into the Mustang's bodywork and finished with a spray-in bedliner. The factory doors and rear quarter-panels above the wheels remain, whilst the modified bootlid functions as a tailgate.

Ford EVB Metal Shop manager Matt Korczyk said the project was 'a way to train apprentices by allowing them to get real-world, hands-on experience by way of building a concept car'. The vehicle was revealed as the latest addition to Ford's US Heritage Fleet.
