A former church leader and his wife have been charged with eight counts of rape each.

Stephen Timmis, aged 68, and his wife Janet, aged 61, have each been charged with eight counts of rape. The charges relate to offences alleged to have occurred between May and September 2008, when Timmis was a leader at The Crowded House church in Sheffield. The charges follow a report of non-recent sexual abuse.

Both have been released on bail and are due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 1 December. South Yorkshire Police said their inquiries suggested former church members may have information that could assist the investigation and urged them to come forward. The force said anyone with information would be offered appropriate support as required.
