Former soldier sentenced for sexual assault at nightclub

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 27 Oct, 07:02 · Archive

Lee Slater, 42, was sentenced on 22 October for sexually assaulting a woman at a Bowness nightclub.

Lee Slater, 42, of Broadway, Fleetwood, was sentenced on 22 October after pleading guilty to sexual assault on a female. He was ordered to complete 200 hours' unpaid work.

The assault took place at The Wheelhouse Nightclub in Bowness-on-Windermere in the early hours of the morning. Prosecutor Peter Kelly told South Cumbria Magistrates' Court that Slater squeezed the woman's genitals by placing his hand up her skirt as she was dancing with friends. The assault lasted a few seconds. The woman pushed him back and he began to apologise. Door staff restrained him until police arrived, and CCTV footage of the incident was shown to the court.

In her victim impact statement, the woman told police: 'I have not been on anymore nights out since the incident. I feel nervous about going out, it gives me anxiety.' The court was told Slater had a previous conviction for sexual assault dating back to 2005. His solicitor, Sarangi Supratim, said in mitigation that Slater had no recollection of the incident and that he was appalled by what had taken place and its impact on the victim. She noted that whilst drink was clearly a problem, 'it is not an excuse'.
