Four people died in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 in Moody County, South Dakota, on Monday evening. Three of the victims were students at Flandreau Public Schools.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, an 88-year-old man driving a Ford Ranger was travelling north in the southbound lanes of I-29 near mile marker 119 when he collided head-on with a southbound Dodge Grand Caravan that was passing a semi-truck. The Dodge was then struck by the semi, which jackknifed. All four occupants of the Dodge—a 15-year-old driver, a 12-year-old front-seat passenger, and 16- and 12-year-old back-seat passengers—were ejected from the vehicle. The driver and two passengers died at the scene, and the third was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries. The wrong-way driver was also ejected and died. Officials said none of those in the Dodge were wearing seatbelts. The semi driver was not injured.
Flandreau Public Schools announced a 10 a.m. start time on Tuesday to give parents time to communicate with their children. Counselling staff, members of the Ministerial Association, and other resources were made available for students, teachers and staff. Southbound I-29 was closed for approximately six hours following the crash. The Highway Patrol said the investigation was ongoing.
