France's soccer ethics body has called on fans to keep political messages out of stadiums amid nationwide student protests.
France's soccer ethics body, the Conseil national de l'Éthique et de Déontologie, has called on fans to keep political messages out of stadiums amid nationwide student protests. The protests, which have drawn international attention, are against under-resourced schools. The police response has been forceful, with riot police using tear gas and batons to disperse largely peaceful crowds. More than 6,600 arrests were made nationwide as of last week. Several young people have suffered serious injuries blamed on police weaponry, including a 14-year-old whose jaw and teeth were shattered by a tear gas grenade and a 15-year-old who lost a hand from a stun grenade.
At a Ligue 1 match between Lens and Lyon, fans unfurled a banner calling for an end to 'disproportionate and systematic police violence'. At a PSG versus Le Mans match, supporters displayed a banner reading 'Your militias repress; our youth resist'. The ethics body acknowledged that young supporters, often students themselves, might use matches to express solidarity with demonstrators. However, it stated that political neutrality 'is enshrined' in the laws of sport, both through the Olympic Charter and FIFA statutes internationally and at national level.
