A shop owner in Sunderland wrestled a suspected firearm from a man who attempted to rob his store on Monday morning.

A shop owner in Sunderland wrestled a suspected firearm from a man during an attempted armed robbery on Monday morning. Jayanthan David, 51, owner of the Family Shopper Convenience Store on Mill Terrace in Shiney Row, was working when the incident occurred at around 11.30am.

The intruder entered wearing a full mask carrying what Mr David believed to be a real gun. When challenged to remove the mask, the man demanded money. Mr David said he had only pennies and moved to close the shop shutters. As the intruder tried to squeeze under the shutters to escape, Mr David pushed the gun from his hand and kicked it away.

A second man then pulled the intruder away from Mr David, and both fled together in the direction of South View. The shop owner said he initially thought the second man was helping him, but the man instead assisted the intruder's escape. Northumbria Police arrived quickly and collected CCTV footage and forensic evidence, including fingerprints from the railings outside. Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to trace in connection with the incident.
