Gardner Minshew named Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback
Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 3 Nov, 00:08 · Archive
Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur named Gardner Minshew as the team's starting quarterback on Monday after Minshew led a remarkable comeback in Sunday's 33-30 overtime victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Minshew entered the game late in the third quarter in place of struggling starter Jacoby Brissett and orchestrated four consecutive touchdown drives, finishing with 188 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Brissett, who was paid $15.5 million this season under a reworked deal signed during training camp, had struggled through eight games and was benched after completing just 10 of 23 passes for 117 yards and an interception. Coach LaFleur said Minshew provided the 'spark' the team's offence needed, praising his pocket movement, reads and accuracy.
Minshew will start Sunday's game against Seattle with rookie Carson Beck moving into the backup role and Brissett demoted to emergency third-string quarterback. The move comes as the trade deadline approaches on 10 November.
