The Prince of Wales made a surprise appearance on the Graham Norton Show in a special edition dedicated to his Earthshot Prize. The episode, pre-recorded and airing on BBC One on Friday at 22:40, saw William join Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham on the sofa to gasps from the audience. All three guests are connected to the prize: Blanchett is a council member, Irwin is a global ambassador and Waddingham hosted the 2023 ceremony in Singapore.
William established the Earthshot Prize in 2020, drawing inspiration from President Kennedy's Moonshot project. The prize aims to celebrate and scale solutions to repair the planet. There are five categories, or 'Earthshots': Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Oceans, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. Each category winner receives £1 million. William has committed himself to the prize until 2030.
On the show, William and his fellow guests discussed the need to pair optimism and urgency when tackling climate change. Blanchett described the prize as a 'tapestry of solutions', while Irwin highlighted how it has built a new generation of environmental advocates. The Daily Mail reports that William also spoke about his support for Aston Villa and his love of Christopher Nolan films, and revealed his family watches Celebrity Traitors.
The prize has already been staged in London, Singapore, Cape Town, Boston and Rio de Janeiro since its launch in 2021. The project is halfway through its decades-long cycle. This year's ceremony will take place in Mumbai in November, where William will preside over the awards ceremony, meet Bollywood stars and 'play with cricketing royalty'. Children across India have been encouraged to tackle environmental issues under the 'I can Earthshot Challenge'.
