A 59-year-old Gaylord woman has been arrested after a months-long investigation into luggage thefts at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

A 59-year-old Gaylord woman has been arrested following a months-long investigation into luggage thefts at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. Renee Elias was arrested on 28 October and has been charged with two felony counts of larceny in a building. She has been lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail.

Airport police began investigating in August after several travellers reported checked luggage taken from the baggage claim area before they could retrieve it. The first complaint investigators tied to Elias came in April, though officers could not determine when that bag was taken. Airport Police Chief Joseph Fitzgerald said officers reviewed the airport's surveillance video and identified the suspect entering the airport and leaving with luggage. Police also used Flock cameras to identify the suspect's vehicle arriving at and leaving the airport.

With the identification of a suspect, officers obtained a search warrant. Working with Michigan State Police and the Traverse City Police Department, they recovered more than $10,000 in stolen property, including personal items and electronics. According to Fitzgerald, Elias had no affiliation with the airport. Elias is due to return to court on 10 November for a probable cause hearing.
