Ghost and folklore experience launches beneath Norwich street

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 10 Oct, 07:13 · Archive

An underground experience exploring Norfolk legends including Black Shuck has launched beneath Upper St Giles Street in Norwich.

An underground experience called Ghost and Folklore of Norfolk has launched in a 27-metre-long vault beneath Upper St Giles Street in Norwich. The space, a former rifle range, was unlocked by staff from Shoebox Experiences earlier this year. Guests meet a lantern bearer outside St Giles Church and descend into the vault to experience 90 minutes of immersive storytelling spanning local folklore and ghostly encounters.

The experience features tales of Black Shuck, the legendary ghostly hound of East Anglia, and other Norfolk mysteries including the lantern men of the Norfolk Broads. A costumed storyteller guides visitors through the space by lantern light.

Tom Gaskin, CEO of Shoebox Enterprises, the charity partnered with Shoebox Experiences, reported strong demand. He said tickets were released two weeks before his statement and nearly half had sold. Halloween events completely sold out, prompting an extra date on 3 November. Gaskin said the experience builds on the success of the company's earlier Lantern Light Underground Tour, held beneath Castle Meadow, which has been put on hold this year.
