Asian Football Confederation endorses Infantino for FIFA presidency

The Asian Football Confederation has endorsed Gianni Infantino for another term as FIFA president.
The head of the Asian Football Confederation, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, announced Friday that the body is endorsing Gianni Infantino for another term as FIFA president. The AFC has 47 member confederations whose votes could prove significant in securing another mandate for Infantino. The FIFA election is in March, with a deadline of November 18 for candidates to file against him. So far none has done so.
Sheikh Salman embraced Infantino with a large hug at the AFC's extraordinary congress meeting in Tokyo as he delivered the endorsement. "We affirm our full commitment to supporting you and your leadership as you seek a new mandate as the FIFA president," Sheikh Salman said. He acknowledged that not every AFC member would necessarily follow the endorsement, but indicated most would.
The endorsement represents an abrupt reversal. Just over two months ago, the AFC joined soccer governing bodies from Europe and North and Central America in saying that Infantino had committed a "fundamental breach of trust." Infantino apologized last week to FIFA's 37-member ruling council for "mistakes" he made in assembling a now-scrapped $4.2 billion plan for the World Cup.
