Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey from February to May 20, 2027.

Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey from its originally planned February 16 release date to May 20, 2027. The delay pushes the game back by three months on PlayStation 5.

In announcing the delay, the studio said: 'Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we've been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye's journey through the Everywhen. We don't take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.'

The studio did not provide specific reasons for the delay beyond the need for additional polishing. Engadget reports that the delay gives the game breathing room from a crowded release schedule in February, including Sony's own Until Dawn 2 launching on January 28, and MLB The Show typically releasing in March.

In God of War Laufey, players will control Faye, the wife of usual protagonist Kratos, again portrayed by actress Deborah Ann Woll. According to The Verge, based on a 23-minute gameplay reveal earlier this year, Laufey plays differently from recent God of War games, with more emphasis on acrobatic action. Engadget adds that Faye reawakens in the afterlife and undertakes her own adventure running parallel to the events of God of War and God of War Ragnarök.

Metro notes that while the delay moves the game from the crowded February slate, it will still launch before Sony discontinues physical PlayStation 5 games after 2027.
