Google Pixel SOS alerts rescue team to lost Blencathra couple

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 14:29 · Archive

A couple lost on Blencathra used their Google Pixel phone's SOS feature to alert Keswick Mountain Rescue Team after becoming stranded with no signal.

A couple had to be rescued after taking a wrong turn during their descent of Sharp Edge on Blencathra on October 17. They had successfully completed the climb but became lost on the way down, ending up near the River Caldew. One of them slipped into the water and became very cold.

With no phone signal and darkness falling, they triggered a Google Pixel SOS alert. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 6.30pm. The team initially struggled to locate the couple despite using searchlights and a thermal camera to search the area.

The pair eventually managed to climb onto Mungrisedale Common, where they regained phone reception and could make contact with the rescue team. Once contact was established, they were advised to keep moving to stay warm and used their mobile phone torches to help guide team members to their location.

When found, the couple were given a heated vest and escorted back to the rescue vehicles. The operation involved ten team members and lasted four hours and 40 minutes.
