Greater Anglia services disrupted by track defect in Essex

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 15 Oct, 10:30 · Archive

Greater Anglia services across Essex face delays and cancellations due to a track defect between Ingatestone and Chelmsford.

A track defect between Ingatestone and Chelmsford has disrupted Greater Anglia services across Essex. A speed restriction has been put in place, forcing trains to run at reduced speed through the area. This affects services towards Witham, Braintree and Colchester, as well as longer routes from London Liverpool Street to Colchester Town, Clacton-on-Sea, Braintree, Ipswich and Norwich.

Seventeen Greater Anglia services were delayed or altered as a result of the disruption. The 10am Colchester Town to Colchester service was cancelled for safety checks. Trains continue to run but travel more slowly through the affected area, causing delays to journeys. Some trains may have amended calling patterns to keep them on time.

Greater Anglia said that Network Rail response teams were attending reports of the track defect. A spokesperson stated: 'Due to a speed restriction over defective track between Ingatestone and Chelmsford trains have to run at reduced speed on the line towards Witham, Braintree and Colchester.'

Passengers were advised to expect delays and consider alternative ways to travel. Those with advance tickets could travel on an earlier or later train if their booked service was cancelled. Passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more may qualify for compensation through the Delay Repay scheme.

Disruption was expected to continue until 12.45pm. Greater Anglia and Network Rail apologised for any journeys affected by the disruption.
