Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, starring Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep and others.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, the first chronological book in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia series. The film marks Gerwig's follow-up to her $1 billion-grossing film Barbie.

The trailer shows magician Andrew Ketterley, played by Daniel Craig, giving a magic ring to a group of children that will transport them to strange and wonderful lands. It introduces the young protagonists Digory and Polly, played by newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, who discover the Wood Between Worlds, a magical realm containing portals to different dimensions. The trailer also features Jadis, played by Emma Mackey, who becomes the White Witch, and Aslan the lion, voiced by Meryl Streep. The soundtrack features Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven'.

At a trailer premiere event in New York, Gerwig spoke of her connection to Lewis's work, saying: "I don't remember a time I didn't know the books. I wouldn't be who I am without these books." She also told Netflix's chief executive Ted Sarandos: "I only know how to make movies for the big screen." The Magician's Nephew will have an eight-week theatrical window beginning 12 February, before streaming on Netflix from 2 April in what Netflix describes as its first global theatrical release.
