Ipswich has UK's hardest tap water, study finds

Ipswich has been named the area with the hardest tap water in the United Kingdom, measuring 435mg of calcium carbonate per litre.
Ipswich has topped a new UK ranking for the hardest tap water in the country. The Suffolk town's tap water measures 435 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre, the highest recorded in a study of 64 towns and cities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The comparison was carried out by UK Hair Transplants, using each water company's own figures for the supply zone serving the centre of each place.
Dr Adam Ali, hair transplant surgeon at UK Hair Transplants, explained the effects of hard water on hair. 'Water as hard as Ipswich's leaves a film of minerals on your hair every time you wash it,' he said. 'Over time that can make it feel rough and dry, and to my eye it looks duller too. Hair like that is more likely to snap when you brush it, especially if it's already fine or coloured.'
Dr Ali stressed that the issue concerns hair breakage rather than hair loss. 'I want to be clear that this is about hair snapping, not hair loss,' he said. 'The kind I treat as a transplant surgeon starts at the root and comes down to genes and hormones, and tap water doesn't cause it.'
