Alfie Conway-Ryle has been convicted of murdering William Ffrench, whose brain injury from the assault prevented him receiving cancer treatment.
Alfie Conway-Ryle, 26, of Ilderton Road in Southwark, has been convicted of murder at Croydon Crown Court following an assault on 66-year-old William Ffrench, known as Owen, in June 2024. The attack took place in the early hours of 27 June on Jocelyn Street, SE15, near Surrey Canal. CCTV footage showed Conway-Ryle telling a bystander he intended to kill Mr Ffrench before tripping him and stamping on his head more than 15 times over 40 seconds.
Mr Ffrench suffered a catastrophic brain injury and never regained consciousness. He was later diagnosed with lung cancer whilst in hospital, but doctors determined he was too unwell to undergo treatment due to the severity of his brain injury. This left him unable to access potentially life-saving cancer care.
Detective Inspector Richard Mackenzie said: 'The investigation did not end with Owen's assault. Working alongside specialist medical experts, we established that those injuries left Owen unable to receive treatment for cancer diagnosed months later. This evidence was instrumental in proving the assault had fatal consequences long after the attack itself.'
