Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 24 Oct, 07:09 · Archive

West Wales has significantly higher rates of entrepreneurs aged over 60 than the UK average, according to new research.

West Wales has some of the highest rates of older entrepreneurs in Wales, according to a new study by Virtual HQ. The research analysed Companies House data for businesses incorporated between August 2025 and July 2026. Ceredigion had 12.2 per cent of company founders aged over 60, Pembrokeshire had 9.2 per cent, and Carmarthenshire had 9.1 per cent. This compares to a UK average of 5.9 per cent. Across Wales, only the Isle of Anglesey (13.7 per cent) and Monmouthshire (13.5 per cent) had higher proportions of over-60 founders.

The study also identified younger entrepreneurial talent. Denbighshire topped the Welsh list for under-25 founders, with 9.5 per cent of new company directors in this age group, above the UK average of 8.7 per cent. Andrew Manning, managing director at Virtual HQ, noted that setting up a limited company has become quicker and cheaper, with many people now starting businesses in their early twenties. He added that young founders should be aware that incorporating puts them on a public register, with their service address searchable by the public.
