Heavy rain floods homes and strands vehicles in Scarborough

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 24 Oct, 08:32 · Archive

Heavy rain caused flash flooding in Scarborough on Friday, with homes and vehicles affected as Storm Boelo approaches.

Heavy rain caused flash flooding across Scarborough on Friday. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to more than a dozen reports of flooding. Crews pumped water from homes in Westbourne Grove, Falsgrave Road and St Johns Road from 5pm onwards, and attended several flooded businesses.

The fire service dealt with 'significant flooding' at a business in Esplanade, which lost power, and at Westwood Road where the flooded area measured around 80m by 40m. Crews used a portable pump to remove water from the Westwood Road property, which did not spread to nearby homes. At about 5.55pm, fire crews rescued occupants from a vehicle that had entered floodwater in Plantation Hill.

North Yorkshire Police closed several roads including Manor Road, Scalby Road, Valley Road, Valley Bridge, Filey Road and Ramshill Road due to flooding. By Friday night, water was beginning to recede but some roads remained closed. The area now braces for further rain and winds of up to 60mph as Storm Boelo arrives, with yellow weather warnings in place from Saturday midday to Sunday 9pm.
