A 48-year-old hospital patient has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly setting another patient alight in Sydney.

Raymond James Dungay, a 48-year-old patient at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Sydney, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly pouring petrol on three fellow patients and setting one on fire. Emergency services were called to the hospital at about 10.45pm on Tuesday evening. Police allege Dungay poured an accelerant on two men aged 54 and 63 and a 64-year-old woman before setting the 54-year-old man alight. Hospital staff quickly extinguished the fire.

The 54-year-old victim, Radovan Banic, who had been admitted for spinal treatment, sustained minor burns and remained in stable condition under observation. Speaking from hospital, Banic said he smelt petrol moments before the attack. 'I smelt it, but it was too late. He already lit me up,' he told media. The two other patients treated for minor injuries also remained in stable condition.

Dungay was charged with two counts of attempted murder, common assault and two counts of intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was expected to appear at a bail hearing. The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District said staff had responded quickly and were offering support to those affected. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park described the incident as 'very concerning and serious'.
