A Range Rover has crashed into and demolished the market cross at the centre of Howden, East Yorkshire.

A Range Rover crashed into the historic market cross in Howden, East Yorkshire on Thursday morning, demolishing the monument. The silver vehicle mounted a paved area and became perched on the base of the wrecked structure, which stands on a double-stepped plinth in Market Cross. Emergency services attended the scene and taped off the area.

According to the Huddersfield Examiner, the driver had been parked before the vehicle 'lurched forward' and collided with the steps. The incident occurred shortly after 10.30am. One pedestrian is believed to have been taken to hospital.

Local councillor David Howard attended the scene after being alerted to the crash. He described the cross as 'in a real mess' and noted confusion over its ownership. The Telegraph & Argus reported that the cross marks the centre of the town and is located close to the town's historic minster.

Mr Howard said the cross 'marks the centre of the town and it needs to be put back in some form – restored, repaired, replaced.' He added that the immediate priority was to 'make it safe and conserve as much as possible.'

The incident echoes a previous collision at nearby Oakenshaw Cross at the junction of Wyke Lane, Cross Street and Sykes Lane, which had to be removed from its location after being hit by several vehicles. Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue attended Thursday's incident in Howden.
