Glasgow women cyclists light up streets for safety campaign

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 4 Nov, 07:17 · Archive

Around 150 women and non-binary cyclists will ride through Glasgow on 7 November to call for safer cycling routes after dark.

Around 150 women and non-binary cyclists will gather at Queen's Park in Glasgow on 7 November for an event called Ride Bright. The group will depart at 5pm and travel roughly 6.4km to Kinning Park Complex, a journey taking about an hour, to call for safer streets for women cycling at night.

Many women in the community have either stopped cycling following abuse or reduced their journeys during darker months due to a lack of safe, well-lit cycle routes. The event, organised by Women On Wheels and Sunny Cycles and funded by Glasgow City Council's Area Partnership Fund, aims to create a safe, empowering space whilst raising awareness of these safety concerns.

Katherine Cory, families activities coordinator at Women On Wheels, said the organisation is working to address women's barriers to cycling and is hopeful that Glasgow Council's feminist city planning toolkit and strategy, due to launch in 2027, will help address some of the issues. 'Ride Bright is not only a callout for safer cycling at night, but also a celebration of the growing cycling community in Glasgow and an opportunity for women to feel the power in numbers,' she said. The ride is open to women, including trans and intersex women, and non-binary people aged 16 and over, with all types of bikes welcome.
