Bangarra Dance Theatre presents a double bill pairing Indigenous knowledge holders with choreographers to share cultural stories.

Bangarra Dance Theatre is staging 'Generations', a double bill pairing Indigenous knowledge holders with professional choreographers. Bangarra's artistic director and co-chief executive Frances Rings said the program honours the preservation of knowledge whilst looking towards those who will carry it forward.

The first show, 'Spearhead - Kunpu Kanyini', features Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara Elder Josephine Mick collaborating with choreographer Jasmin Sheppard and her daughter Sally Scales. The show tells the story of the tjakura (great desert skink) and celebrates the strength and leadership of Central Desert women. Ms Mick said the work shares cultural knowledge with the next generation through song, dance, paintings and performance on a professional stage.

The second production, 'Sever - Rom Bukthunami', was created by Yolngu songman and artist Douglas Djakapurra Munyarryun with Bangarra's Rikki Mason. It explores questions of belonging, culture in urban landscapes and how to reconcile ancestral knowledge with emerging technologies. Ms Mick emphasised that looking after Country and each other is central to both works and expressed the importance of teaching future generations who will carry the stories forward.
