Inquest opened into Lake District woman's death after fall

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 14 Oct, 08:58 · Archive

An 88-year-old Pooley Bridge woman died in hospital after suffering pelvic fractures in a fall at home.

An inquest has opened into the death of Anne Digby, 88, of Church Croft, Pooley Bridge, who died at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle on 5 April. She died after suffering pelvic fractures in a fall at her home.

Area coroner for Cumbria Margaret Taylor opened the inquest at Cumbria Coroner's Court in Workington on 6 October. Ms Taylor said: 'An investigation into Mrs Digby's death has been required because her death was directly caused by fractures sustained in a fall at home.'

Mrs Digby was understood to have fallen on 4 April. Paramedics attended and found her unresponsive, but obtained spontaneous circulation and conveyed her to hospital. She was described as being very poorly throughout her admission and was not considered suitable for intensive care. Instead she was cared for 'in such a way to maximise her comfort'. Her death was confirmed at 3.42pm.

The provisional medical cause of death was given as cardiorespiratory arrest, fat embolism, pelvic fractures and a fall.

Ms Taylor recognised Mrs Digby's son as an interested person and requested a pen portrait of his mother from the family. She asked the family to outline what they know about falls on 2 and 4 April and provide information about the treatment Mrs Digby received.

The coroner has requested a patient report form from the North West Ambulance Service and a factual statement from Mrs Digby's GP. She has also asked North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust for a statement covering Mrs Digby's admission, treatment and death, together with her medical records from the final hospital admission.
