Isle of Wight seeks First World War hospital stories from families

Summarised from Isle of Wight County Press's report · Updated 5 Nov, 21:51 · Archive

A University of Buckingham researcher is appealing for stories from families connected to First World War hospitals on the Isle of Wight.

Sarah Luton, a PhD researcher in Garden History at the University of Buckingham, is appealing to Isle of Wight residents and families for stories about people connected to the Island's First World War hospitals between 1914 and 1930. She has volunteered in the gardens at Osborne for over eight years and is now researching the hospitals, auxiliary hospitals and convalescent homes that operated during this period.

Osborne House became a convalescent home for officers during the war. Other establishments she is researching include Red Cross facilities such as Ryde Castle, Northwood House, Gatcombe and Underwath at St Lawrence. Luton is particularly keen to hear from families whose relatives worked or volunteered at these places as doctors, nurses, Voluntary Aid Detachment volunteers, gardeners, cooks or domestic staff. Information about former patients is also welcome.

Families with connections are encouraged to share family photographs, letters, diaries, postcards, documents, memorabilia and personal recollections. Images of hospital buildings, gardens and grounds would be particularly valuable. Anyone with information can contact Luton at sarah.luton25@buckingham.ac.uk.
