An Italian sailor has been charged with exposing himself to a woman in Belfast.

Giuseppe Dimarco, a 42-year-old Italian sailor from Bagheria, Sicily, appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court charged with exposing his genitals with the intention of causing alarm or distress.

The alleged offence took place on Sunday at an undisclosed location in Belfast while Dimarco's vessel was docked undergoing repairs. He is accused of targeting a female victim who recorded the suspected incident on her phone. The footage is due to be processed and sent to the Public Prosecution Service later this week.

Dimarco confirmed he understood the charge during the brief hearing. He remains in custody until police can approve his ship as a potential bail address, with the defence seeking his release to return to the vessel. District Judge Steven Keown asked whether the captain was responsible, reliable and willing to keep Dimarco on the ship until the case is resolved.

During proceedings, Dimarco told the court through an interpreter that he is due to travel to Lisbon on another boat this Saturday. He stated: 'The ship is not leaving, it's me who is leaving.' Judge Keown adjourned the case until Friday and urged prosecutors to expedite proceedings before the defendant's proposed departure date, noting that whilst not a minor offence, the matter needed to be resolved quickly.
