Jeremy Clarkson floated as potential Thames Valley mayor

Jeremy Clarkson's name has been floated as a potential candidate for the first elected mayor of the Thames Valley, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands. The former Top Gear presenter and Clarkson's Farm star has been discussed in council circles as a potential high-profile figurehead for the region. It is not known whether Clarkson would have any interest in standing for the role, and there is no suggestion he has been formally approached.

Council leaders across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Swindon formally submitted plans to the Government this week to create a new Thames Valley mayoral authority. Clarkson already has strong ties to the Thames Valley through Oxfordshire, where he owns Diddly Squat Farm near Chipping Norton, made famous by his Amazon series Clarkson's Farm.

Councillor Tony Virgo backed the idea of a high-profile figure taking on the role and said Clarkson 'could be an excellent choice'. He said it would 'be a really good idea to generate more economic activity in our region' and that Clarkson 'would certainly stir up debate and interest'. Councillor Mark Ashwell of Wokingham Borough Council said he had not heard the speculation surrounding Clarkson, but suggested there could be benefits to having a recognisable figure as mayor, saying 'a well-known individual would attract attention'.
