Newcastle Jets seek more trophies after A-League Men premiership

Newcastle Jets captain James Delianov says the A-League Men premiers are drawing inspiration from their NRL neighbours Newcastle Knights in pursuit of more silverware. The Jets won the Premier's Plate last season under former Socceroos great Mark Milligan but fell short of the fairytale ending after losing to Sydney FC in a semi-final penalty shootout.

The Knights underwent a remarkable transformation from wooden spooners to grand finalists before suffering a 19-18 defeat to the Sydney Roosters, having received an outpouring of support from Newcastle fans. Delianov said the Jets witnessed this and were motivated by the impact, noting the shared passion among the city's sporting supporters.

"It's definitely motivated us to give those fans something to cheer about over the summer," Delianov said. "It is a rugby league-first kind of city, but we're happy to take on that challenge." The Jets return to action less than a fortnight after the Knights' grand final loss, facing Central Coast in an F3 derby on Saturday. The Jets have lost thirteen players in the off-season, including star striker Lachie Rose and fellow young stars Clayton Taylor and Eli Adams.
