Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 26 Oct, 23:31 · Archive

Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or after scoring 73 goals for club and country last season.

Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday at a ceremony held at the London Palladium Theatre in London, becoming the first Englishman to win the prestigious prize in 25 years. The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals for club and country last season and was the top vote-getter among nominees including Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

Kane led Bayern to the Bundesliga and German Cup double, scoring a hat trick against Stuttgart in the cup final. At the World Cup, where he captained England, he scored six times to pass Gary Lineker as England's highest World Cup scorer. England reached the World Cup semifinals, where it lost to Argentina, finishing third overall.

'My journey wasn't straightforward. I had to fight my way to be the very best right now,' Kane said. The last Englishman to win the award was Michael Owen in 2001. The ceremony was held in London for the first time, in recognition of Stanley Matthews, the inaugural Ballon d'Or winner in 1956.

Spain's Alexia Putellas won the women's Ballon d'Or for the third time after leading Barcelona to the Women's Champions League and helping Spain win the Women's Nations League last December. The 32-year-old midfielder, who has since joined London City Lionesses, ended Spain teammate Aitana Bonmati's three-year reign.
