Mandan Middle School celebrates Unity Day with first responders

Mandan Middle School hosted Unity Day, an annual event promoting kindness, inclusion and anti-bullying that took on added significance following a recent community tragedy.

Mandan Middle School in North Dakota held its fourth Unity Day event, a nationwide initiative recognised in October as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Balloons, clothing and the school's walls were decorated in orange, chosen to symbolise unity between all members of the school community.

Throughout the day, students participated in designed lesson plans and listened to guest speakers discuss ways to embrace their gifts and talents. The school also held its first annual first responder versus student dodgeball game. Pam VanBeek, a counselor at the school, said the focus on kindness and inclusion helps build anti-bullying culture and ensures everyone feels they have a part in the community.

The event held particular significance this year following recent losses in the Mandan community. Students reflected on how the emphasis on kindness and inclusion carried personal meaning, with one student noting that the day helps people remember not to bully others because 'you never know what could happen at any time'. VanBeek said the gathering gave students time to decompress and come together as a community with 'more of a special meaning' than previous years.
