Queen Camilla has said she and King Charles read together before dinner every evening.
Queen Camilla has told a documentary about reading for pleasure that she and King Charles read together before dinner each evening at Clarence House. 'When I'm deep in a book, I'll hear him roaring with laughter about something. It's very off-putting,' she said. 'Or I'll suddenly start weeping.'
Camilla, 79, has been a keen reader throughout her life. She said reading has been most of her education since leaving school young, and that books help people learn about others and relieve stress. King Charles favours novels by PG Wodehouse and biographies, whilst Camilla likes historical fiction and thrillers. She also said books helped her father survive more than two years as a prisoner of war in Germany in the early 1940s.
The Queen launched a charity three years ago to promote the benefits of reading after the success of a pandemic-era book club she set up on social media. In Britain, the percentage of children and young people who enjoy books hit its lowest level in 20 years last year, according to the National Literacy Trust, which is now working with the government and Camilla's charity to reverse this decline. The documentary, The Book That Changed My Life, will air in the UK on Wednesday.
