A kitten named Atlas has had both eyes removed after being rescued with nearly 30 other cats near Loddon.
A kitten named Atlas has undergone surgery to have both eyes removed after being rescued by Cats Protection Norwich from a feral colony of almost 30 kittens near Loddon. Atlas came into care with his brother and two sisters after concerned local people alerted volunteers to the growing group.
Atlas was found to have a cataract in his right eye, which was cloudy, red and watering. Further examination revealed he also had entropion, a painful condition in which the eyelid and lashes turn inward. Vets decided to remove both eyes to end his suffering and give him the best chance at a pain-free life.
Rebecca Phillips, Cats Protection Norwich & District co-ordinator, said: 'The poor boy must have been in a lot of distress before we got to him.' She added that Atlas has recovered well since surgery, playing with toys and responding affectionately. The specialist surgery cost £1,295, bringing the total cost of the colony project to nearly £3,600. The charity is appealing for donations to cover the costs, stating that caring for Atlas and the colony has significantly strained their funds as a volunteer team relying entirely on public donations.
