Specially trained security dogs have discovered seven knives and other weapons hidden around Ipswich.
Specialist security dogs have uncovered knives, drugs and improvised weapons across Ipswich through DK9 Security's knife and drug detection programme. The dogs have discovered seven knives hidden in bins, buried in flowerpots and duct-taped under bin lids around town and parks, along with makeshift knuckle dusters and other improvised weapons.
The dogs are deployed at nightlife venues including Bar 21 in Ipswich, Hatton Court and Bar 21 in Bury St Edmunds as a precautionary measure. Operators report a fall in weapons and drugs being found in venues where the dogs are regularly deployed. Director Darren Debenham said customers have found the dogs popular and many report feeling safer in town. 'Some people tell us they haven't been out for over a year and now they feel more comfortable,' he said.
Any weapons or drugs discovered by the dogs are handed to police. Mr Debenham believes greater use of detection dogs could help tackle knife crime in public spaces as well as nightlife venues, and he wants police, councils and schools to consider using the dogs as part of wider prevention efforts.
