Mainoo and Shaw doubtful for United's Atletico Madrid trip

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 12 Oct, 13:44 · Archive

Manchester United may be without Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw for their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Manchester United are waiting on late fitness decisions for Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw ahead of their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Both players missed Monday's training session at their Carrington base, though they started in the weekend draw against Tottenham Hotspur. A decision on whether either will travel to Spain is expected before the squad departs.

Mainoo pulled out of England duty over the recent international break due to injury and workload management. United are keen not to overload their young midfielder early in the season. If he is unavailable, £70m summer signing Carlos Baleba is ready to make his first start. The Mirror reports that Baleba came off the bench on Saturday.

Shaw's absence would be more problematic. United are without left back alternatives Dorgu, who was injured playing for Denmark during the international break, and Mazraoui, who also missed Monday's training. The Mirror notes that United tried and failed to sign Lewis Hall in the summer, leaving Carrick with limited options at left back if Shaw cannot travel. Matthijs de Ligt trained but is not expected to feature.
