Friends of the Lake District is calling for volunteers to help restore six kilometres of native hedgerow this winter.
Friends of the Lake District is calling for volunteers to help plant and restore six kilometres of native hedgerow this winter as part of its Hedges and Edges project, which aims to boost wildlife habitats and improve land resilience across Cumbria.
Last winter, 107 volunteers contributed 815 hours to plant 17,860 trees across 25 sites. Volunteer planting days will take place across Cumbria, starting in areas near Penrith and Kendal.
Naomi Walker, nature recovery officer at Friends of the Lake District, said hedgerows support healthy soils, hold carbon and slow down water flow, preventing erosion and flooding. They also provide field boundaries and shelter for farm animals. According to Walker, 118,000 miles of hedgerows have been lost across the country since the 1950s.
The project is supported by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, the Tree Council, and several charitable trusts. Many of the trees used are supplied by the Woodland Trust.
Volunteer events are open to anyone aged 16 or over. Children are welcome with adult supervision, and the charity may be able to accommodate larger groups of younger people such as school parties upon request. Walker said the work is 'extremely satisfying and a great day out'.
