The Lake District National Park Authority has approved multiple wastewater improvements as part of United Utilities' multimillion-pound Windermere Programme.
The Lake District National Park Authority has approved two major elements of United Utilities' multimillion-pound Windermere Programme to improve wastewater treatment and reduce phosphorus entering the lake.
The authority granted planning permission on October 19 for a temporary construction compound at an existing layby opposite the entrance to Far Sawrey Wastewater Treatment Works at High Cunsey, Claife. The application was registered on August 18. United Utilities plans to fence off the existing hardstanding area for construction vehicle parking, material storage and a towable welfare unit. The site's constrained location, surrounded by steep ground and ancient woodland, means a remote compound is needed to support the project. The 257 square metre compound is within Waterbarrow Ancient and Semi-Natural Woodland, and a mature oak tree beside the site was identified as potentially being a veteran tree.
On October 23, the authority also approved plans for a new wastewater treatment system at Rydal Hall near Ambleside. The application, submitted by Martin Terry of Rydal Hall Estates, was registered on June 25. The development will include a buried FujiClean CRX50 treatment unit measuring 10.03 metres long, 2.3 metres wide and 2.4 metres high. Once work is finished, only its access covers and concrete surrounds will be visible at ground level, with a dark green control kiosk to house electrical equipment.
The improvements across the Windermere Programme are planned at nine wastewater treatment works at Ambleside, Far Sawrey, Ferry House, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Langdale, Near Sawrey, Outgate and Troutbeck. Work is also planned at all six storm overflows which discharge into Windermere, with United Utilities saying the improvements would reduce spills to an average of 10 per year. At Far Sawrey, the existing treatment works are due to be replaced with a new treatment process to meet the required discharge consent.
Rydal Hall's location is particularly sensitive because it and its grounds contain numerous heritage assets. These include the Grade II* listed Rydal Hall, its terraces, barns and stables, a summerhouse, bridge, game larder and ice house. The site is also within the Grade II* listed Rydal Hall Historic Park and Garden, Rydal Conservation Area and the English Lake District World Heritage Site.
