Wiltshire landmark restoration begins after decade under hoardings

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 7 Oct, 06:15 · Archive

The Lansdowne Monument on Cherhill Down in Wiltshire is being restored after years of protection from falling debris.

The restoration of the Lansdowne Monument, one of Wiltshire's most recognisable landmarks, is progressing after scaffolders completed a major access project at the site on Cherhill Down near Calne. The Bristol-based firm Shield Services Group was brought in by conservation specialists Cliveden Conservation to design and install scaffolding at the 38-metre-high stone monument, which is owned by the National Trust.

The Grade II* listed obelisk has stood above the Wiltshire countryside since it was erected in 1845 by Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, to designs by Sir Charles Barry. The monument commemorates his ancestor Sir William Petty. The structure has been shrouded by protective hoardings for well over a decade because of falling debris, obscuring one of the region's most recognisable landmarks.

Getting equipment to the site proved to be one of the biggest challenges for the restoration team. The steep, heavily rutted track leading to the monument meant large vehicles could not travel far up the hill, while access by four-wheel-drive vehicles depended on ground conditions. The team enlisted help from a local farmer to transport materials up the track.

Despite the difficult conditions and exposed hilltop location, Shield Services Group completed the substantial scaffolding installation in just 19 days. The team took particular care because of the monument's sensitive historic setting and prominent position in the landscape. Pictures have since shown the progress of major repairs to the iconic structure.
