Leeds grandmother features in MND awareness campaign

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

A 78-year-old grandmother from Leeds is starring in a national awareness campaign for motor neurone disease.

Tahira Chaudhry, 78, from Leeds, is sharing her story as part of the MND Association's new campaign, Life Stripped Away. The campaign is being featured on billboards across England, Wales and Northern Ireland throughout October, aiming to raise awareness of motor neurone disease, a fatal, rapidly progressing neurological condition.

Ms Chaudhry was diagnosed with MND in 2018 after noticing something felt stuck in her throat. Since then, the disease has severely limited her independence, taking away her ability to enjoy walks in nature and time in her garden. She said: 'I hope this campaign reaches far and wide and just makes people stop for a second, think and reflect, perhaps even be grateful for what they have and then raise awareness.'

Richard Evans, director of engagement at the MND Association, said the campaign aims to give people with MND a platform to tell their stories and help the public understand the reality of the disease. Six people are diagnosed with MND each day, and six people die from it daily. There is no cure. The MND Association supports people affected by the disease through volunteers across Yorkshire who offer practical and emotional support.
